Ingredients:
- 1 ½ cups warm water
- 2 tsp dry yeast
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 TBS brown sugar
- 1 TBS melted butter
- 4 cups all purpose flour
- 1 egg
- Coarse salt
Bath:
- ¼ cup bicarbonate of soda
- 6 Cups of water
Method:
- Heat the oven to 200C.
- Whisk the water and yeast together and allow to sit for a minute – Make sure the water is not boiling or the yeast will not activate.
- Whisk in the salt, sugar and melted butter then slowly add in the flour and mix with a wooden spoon until combined then use your hands to knead it together into a smooth ball.
- Cover and set aside to rise until double its size.
- Bring the bath to a simmer with the 6 cups of water and bicarbonate of soda.
- Then on a floured divide the dough into 8 pieces and roll into hot dog shapes and allow to rise again.
- With a slotted spoon gently lower a few into the bath at a time and allow to cook turning for 1 minute. Take out of the water and drip dry, then place on a greased baking sheet.
- Brush all the buns with a whisked egg and sprinkle with rock salt.
- Bake for 15 – 20 minutes until golden brown.
- Serve with bratwurst, mustard and sauerkraut and ofcourse some German beer.
