You’ve heard of drinking responsibly, but what about drinking sustainably? On World Environment Day, we’ve explored some ways you can consider the environment in your Market Liquors choices.

1. Drink Local. South Africa has given rise to many quality local craft beers and craft gins. Supporting a local brewer or distiller, not only decreases the shipping miles of your beverage of choice, but also boosts local enterprise and small business growth. Local is lekker!
2. Save Water, Drink Beer. There is actually some truth is this humorous saying. It takes 219 litres of water to make just 250 ml (one large glass) of wine, but only 136 litres of water to make 250ml (half a pint) of beer. So there you have it!
3. Buy organic. By selecting beverages marked as organic you are considering the Earth by ensuring no harmful pesticides and insecticides were used in the growing of the ingredients. And, no harmful chemicals were used in the manufacturing process, which means you might actually have less of a hangiver the next day!
4. Choose cans over glass. Both 100% recyclable, the transportation of cans results in 30% fewer emissions in the distribution process, due to its weight.
5. Consider the container. Think about what materials can be recycled in your local community. Some tips would be glass or tin over plastic, especially mixed-material containers such a wine boxes using paper and plastic, which are not recyclable.
